Israeli airstrikes and Hamas rocket fire over Gaza

World Today

More than 40 targets hit by the Israeli military — sites it says are used to make, store and launch rockets — fire into Israel. More than 20 were fired into Israel overnight, with some intercepted by the country’s missile defense system Iron Dome. NBC’s Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

Israel is considering launching a ground invasion to stop the rocket fire. It began warning thousands of residents to leave their homes in the north of the Gaza Strip or risk being injured or worse, killed. The warnings have sent people escaping for their lives.

On the streets, we found Abu Abdullah. He stayed not out of defiance but because he simply had nowhere to go. Thousands have begun taking refuge at UN schools turned into makeshift shelters.

Others, like Diana Mushtaha, were one of 150 American citizens evacuated by the UN out of Gaza. She’s safely out and now heading back home to Houston, Texas, lucky to be one of the few leaving the war behind.

There are some diplomatic efforts being launched today, particularly with the help of the German Foreign Minister. Egypt and Qatar are trying to mediate as well with Hamas in Gaza, but there’s no indication that any diplomatic process is taking any kind of traction to slow the fighting.
