CCTV America added a new wall mural this week designed by Creative Director Alexander Shields, that features the new CCTV headquarters building in Beijing.

The building, designed by architects Rem Koolhaas and Ole Scheeren of OMA, is an alternative to a “skyscraper.”

“Instead of competing in the race for ultimate height and style within a traditional two-dimensional tower ‘soaring’ skyward, CCTV’s loop poses a truly three-dimensional experience, culminating in a 75-metre cantilever,” the firm writes.

“The building is visible from most of Beijing; it sometimes comes across as big and sometimes small, from some angles strong and from others soft.”

The structure of the CCTV headquarters building included lengthly collaboration between European and Chinese engineers. The facade is made of triangulated steel tubes, known as diagrids, that get dense in areas of greater stress and looser and more open in areas that require less support, the firm said.

The watercolor-like mural also features scenes from China that will greet visitors and staff in the Washington D.C. newsroom.
