Roads near Tiananmen get explosive-proof upgrade

World Today

An explosive-proof layer will be installed underneath the road surface at Chang’an Avenue, which is the major thoroughfare along the front gate of Tiananmen Square, Beijing’s road maintenance officials said on Sunday.

China has begun refurbishing and upgrading roads surrounding Tiananmen Square in order to prepare for the grand parade on Sept. 3, marking the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Streets near Tiananmen Square are under renovation to make them more durable and waterproof. Fences along the Chang’an Avenue have also been replaced with ones carved with a traditional floral pattern.

The annual maintenance work for Tiananmen Square usually starts in late August, which includes repainting the rostrum and other buildings in the square for the National Day of China on Oct. 1.

This year the maintenance has started in advance for the 70th anniversary of victory in the anti-fascist war.
