Shenzhen jaywalkers forced to wear green outfit of shame

World Today

Chinese police in Shenzhen have taken new desperate measures to stop people from jaywalking by harnessing the Chinese aversion to the color green.

Those caught jaywalking are forced to don a green hat and vest and even help the police to direct traffic. In Chinese culture, the expression wearing a “green hat” is an allusion to those men with unfaithful wives, and therefore, a symbol of disgrace.

So far the month-long rule has resulted in punishing 11,000 offenders, according to Guangdong News. It’s not completely cruel, however, since those who find the outfit too offensive have the option of paying 20 yuan ($3.20).

So far the response on Weibo has been mostly positive.
