For the past 14 months, Enrique Gomez and his art collective group known as the “German Crew” have been bringing some much welcome color to the drab concrete streets of the Las Palmitas barrio in Mexico.

With some 20,000 liters (about 5,300 gallons) of paint, hundreds of murals have covered more than 200 homes in the hope of changing some people’s perceptions of the city. Gomez said it has brought crime levels down and has had a major impact on residents.

More details:
  • Gomez grew up on the tough streets Las Palmitas. While he says most of his friends are now either in jail or dead, he was lucky to find a way out of criminal life though graffiti art.
  • The project is funded by the Mexican government, which sees it as an innovative initiative to help a population at risk.
