Brazil cancer patients get the "Beauty Treatment"

Sao Paulo is Brazil’s largest state, has the nation’s largest population (40 million), and is the country’s largest center for manufacturing and industry. It is also home to the Sao Paulo Cancer Institute, the largest hospital in Brazil for treating cancer.

Grueling medication, chemotherapy and surgery…are the usual ways to fight cancer.  But medical treatment isn’t the only way for patients to cope with their illness. In fact, São Paulo’s Cancer Institute began what they call “The Beauty Corner” to offer make-up sessions for patients to boost their appearance and their confidence.

The program includes eyebrow treatments, manicures, and care for hair which is often lost or reduced during chemotherapy. Increasingly, men are requesting the beauty treatments too.

Raising the spirits and self-esteem of the patients makes the volunteers who apply the makeovers feel good about themselves as well. They say seeing the reactions of patients who’ve had their appearance improved, makes them go home feeling more gratified.

As Correspondent Paulo Cabral tells us in his report, while cosmetics and beauty care aren’t a cure for cancer, they certainly give some relief to the burden of the disease. Meet some people in Brazil giving hospital patients a helping hand.
