The Heat: India’s PM Modi and economic development

The Heat

He promised an “economic revolution”. But for India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the question remains, can he deliver?

A recent report by the World Economic Forum placed India near the bottom of a list of 112 nations for inclusive growth. It’s a problem Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party or BJP, knew all too well when they swept to victory in last year’s national elections. Modi pledged to revive India’s fledgling economy and implement structural reforms to attract foreign investment.

Since becoming Prime Minister, he’s visited more than 20 countries, unprecedented for any Indian Prime Minister in such a short time. But for all the travel and all the promises, has India seen any tangible progress? Later we’ll talk with two South Asia scholars and a leading Indian journalist.

CCTV America’s Shweta Bajaj filed this report.

To discuss this topic, The Heat spoke to:

  • Sadanand Dhume, a writer and Resident Fellow with the American Enterprise Institute. Dhume focuses on South Asian society, the political economy and foreign policy.
  • Aparna Pande, a Research Fellow and the Director of the Hudson Institute’s Initiative on the Future of India and South Asia.
  • Foreign Editor and U.S. correspondent for The Times of India, Chidanand Rajghatta also joined the panel.
