China’s first lady Peng Liyuan on Saturday presided at an event commemorating the U.N.’s 2030 development goals for people with disabilities.
Madame Peng unveiled commemorative stamps and delivered a speech in English. She also listened to a blind children’s cappella choir.

The set of stamps was jointly issued by China and the United Nations (UN), and Peng was joined by Yoo Soon-taek, wife of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, at the unveiling ceremony.

It is of great significance that China and the U.N. jointly issue this stamp sheet on the occasion of the 70th founding anniversary of the U.N., which showcases the great emphasis both sides have placed on the welfare of the disabled people, Peng said while addressing the ceremony.

“It is a responsibility of the entire society to guarantee equality, respect and care for every handicapped person, and we need to work together to help them realize their dreams and lead a decent, colorful and successful life,” she added.

Official statistics show that there are over 85 million people in China with various disabilities.
