The Heat: Elections in Haiti

The Heat

Voters in Haiti faced long lines and a lengthy ballot of 54 candidates seeking to be that country’s next president.

It could be the end of November before we learn how the Haitian people voted in Sunday’s presidential and legislative elections.
The top two candidates will face a run-off election in December to succeed incumbent leader Michel Martelly.
The Caribbean nation of about 10-million people has struggled to rebuild since the devastating earthquake leveled much of the capital in 2010.

CCTV America’s Stephen Gibbs reports from Port-au-Prince.

The Heat began its discussion:

  • From Miami, Eduardo Gamarra. He’s a professor at Florida International University and has conducted polls on Haiti’s presidential election.
  • Jean Yves Point-du-Jour is the host of the Haitian radio program, “Konbit Lakay.”
  • From San Francisco, Kevin Pina. He’s a filmmaker and the founding editor of the Haitian Information Project.
  • From Virginia, Robert Fatton. He’s a Haiti expert at the University of Virginia.
