Dozens reportedly killed in airstrikes as Syrians wait for food

There were deadly airstrikes in Idlib province in Syria, while a long day of diplomatic negotiations were ongoing in Damascus.

Syrian human rights officials said dozens of people were reportedly killed in the airstrike. It was not immediately clear if the strike was carried out by Syrian or Russian jets.

U.N. envoy Staffan De Mistura met with Syrian officials, including Syria’s Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem who told De Mistura the Syrian government is ready for negotiations later this month.

A deal to deliver aid to three besieged Syrian towns was also underway. According to the World Food Program, a convoy carrying a month’s worth of food and medicine is expected to reach the rebel-held town of Madaya on Monday, where 40,000 people have been trapped since the town was sealed off in July.

There have been reports of people of eating pets and grass to survive.

Two other towns, Foa’a and Kefrya, have under full rebel siege since March 2015.
