China, Egypt to cooperate on Belt and Road initiative

Chinese President Xi Jinping’s aim in Egypt is to boost cooperation in all areas between the two countries.

Xi met with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi on Thursday and discussed cooperation on infrastructure, construction and production capacity.
The two leaders also talked about the prospects of turning Egypt into a hub under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Beijing is expressing its willingness to participate with Egypt on key projects, like the development of the Suez Canal Corridor and the construction of a new administrative capital.
The Chinese president also invited his Egyptian counterpart to attend the Group of 20 Summit in the Chinese city of Hangzhou in September.


Chinese and Egyptian leaders praise partnership

It has been a day for the history books in Cairo. China’s President Xi Jinping and his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah El Sisi have held talks, signed a string of deals and agreed to further strengthen relations. It’s the first visit by a Chinese president to Egypt in 12 years. Chinese President Xi Jinping described it as a complete success.


El-Sisi expressed a willingness to connect Egypt’s own development plans with the Belt and Road Initiative, and expand infrastructure cooperation with China under the framework of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

Following their talks, the two presidents witnessed the signing of a series of agreements, including a Memorandum of Understanding for Egypt to take part in the Belt and Road Initiative.

It is the first time in 12 years that a Chinese president has visited Egypt.
President Xi’s visit comes at the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries and is expected to chart out a more prosperous future for China and Egypt.
