China and the Republic of Korea support the United Nations resolution to impose new sanctions on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) for its nuclear test and satellite launch, said the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

Hong Lei made the remarks at a regular press conference in Beijing on Monday.

“The two countries have reached unanimous agreement to support the new resolution of the U.N. Security Council on the DPRK for nuclear test and satellite launch. The two sides will work together to maintain the peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, and are committed to developing China-ROK strategic partnership,” said Hong.

Meanwhile, Hong reiterated China’s strong objection to the possible U.S. deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), an advanced U.S. missile defense system, in ROK.

“Chinese special representative for the Korean Peninsula Affairs Wu Dawei has expressed serious concerns over the possible U.S. deployment of the THAAD missile defense system in ROK, stressing that China opposes the U.S. deployment of THAAD in ROK. China hopes ROK will pay high attention to China’s concerns and properly handle the relevant issues,” said Hong.
