Living under Ecuador’s erupting volcanoes can be an explosive experience

For residents of Ecuador, living beneath a volcano can be full of both excitement and fear. As volcanoes erupt after years of being dormant, many Ecuadorans find their livelihoods at risk.

Correspondent Dan Collyns visits some villages located near these volcanoes. He shows us just how disruptive life can be.

The small South American country of Ecuador is home to 84 volcanoes.  They’re part of the Northern Volcanic Zone of the Andes and some of them are considered the most active in the world.  Two of them, the Tungurahua and the Cotopaxi, recently woke up from their slumber with rumbling ash and explosive fire.

As Collyns reports, the eruptions are keeping scientists and locals who live in their shadows on high alert.
