The Heat: Libya – A new beginning?

The Heat

Since the 2011 ouster of Muammar Ghaddafi, Libya has been marred by chaos and violence. Five years later, can a new unity government finally bring peace and stability?

In the years since the United Nations authorized military intervention in Libya, the region has been described as a “failed state.” A country divided by rival governments and political factions. Cause and effect with economic chaos, civil war and a growing threat from Islamic State.

CCTV’s Youssef Gaigi spoke to The Heat from Tunis.

To discuss the future of Libya, we were joined by:

  • Alan Kuperman, a professor of global policy studies at the University of Texas at Austin.
  • Najla El Mangoush, Libyan activist and the program officer for Peacebuilding and Traditional Law at the Center for World Religions, Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution.
  • Sukant Chandan, political analyst and commentator.
