Rescuing disadvantaged kids in Colombia with dance

Americas Now

This week’s Game Changer on “Americas Now” is a Bogota woman who’s using ballet to better the lives of the disadvantaged. She rescues children from distressed environments and teaches them the discipline of dance.

Marlene Hernandez is a self-described “dreambuilder.” She’s also a ballet benefactor.

Within the marginalized neighborhoods of Bogotá, exists the threat of gangs, violence and sexual trafficking. For working parents, the idea of leaving their children alone after school can be worrisome.

Marlene began a foundation that some may consider a mismatch for the city’s streets. It trains the refined art form of ballet to young people struggling to find opportunity in the city’s rough neighborhoods. She believes ballet is an activity that provides the discipline needed to help kids reach their goals.
