More than 30,000 people have arrived on Italian shores so far this year. Most travel there from Libya; the tiny island of Lampedusa is the nearest stop.

A year ago, Italy was simply waving through migrants and refugees in their thousands, most of whom wanted to head on to northern European countries such as Germany.

Now, authorities are re-enforcing the Dublin Regulation which means that all those continuing their journey have already been registered.
