European Commission sets production quotas for on-demand video

The European Commission hopes to bolster the continent’s media industries- namely television and film – through Europe’s new Audiovisual Media Services Directive.

The commission now requires on-demand video services, like Netflix and Amazon Prime, to boost their investment in European TV shows and movies. The plan also requires those companies to ensure that at least 20 percent of their of catalog is European produced.

Critics have said the move is quote ‘prehistoric’ and protectionist. Netflix has said they’re against any quotas, adding that they could be harmful to business and the audience experience.
Despite the grumbling, Netflix has already been producing programs in Europe, including the French political thriller ‘Marseilles.’
