DC organization looks to improve cultural bonds between China-US

Tens of millions of Chinese students are already learning English a mandatory part of their curriculum. But the reverse number is much smaller. One Washington, D.C. based organization is working on changing that.

CCTV America’s Roee Ruttenberg has the report.

The group is known as the US-China Strong Foundation. Their new goal is getting 1 million American youth to learn Mandarin in the U.S.

“We focus on dramatic expansion of Mandarin-language learning and cultural exposure at the youngest age; we focus on increasing opportunities for students of all backgrounds to study abroad in China,” Carola McGiffert, president of U.S.-China Strong Foundation said.

There are currently more than 2 million people living in the U.S. who were born in China. Another 2 million visit each year a number that’s expected to grow.

Another quarter of a million Chinese students are studying in the U.S. But for many Americans, their only sample of China may be Chinese restaurants and so-called “Chinatowns” across the U.S.
