Euro 2016 begins peacefully with French win over Romania3

The first match of the Euro 2016 passed off peacefully in Paris as hosts France to Romania, although security concerns, rotting trash and an ongoing workers strike were just some of the issues affecting football’s European Championships in France.

Fans arriving for the opening match between hosts France and Romania had to clear a triple cordon of security at the Stade de France. This stadium was targeted by Islamic State terrorists last November.

In the 57th minute, delight overcame the crowds as Olivier Giroud scored the first goal of the tournament for France. In the end, France ran out 2-1 winners.

It’s a perfect way for the hosts to kick off this month long tournament, and a chance for France to breathe a collective sigh of relief that the first match passed off peacefully.
