A ceasefire agreement has been reached between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Army of Colombia (FARC). The accord which calls for laying down arms was announced June 23rd and signifies a breakthrough in the peace talks.

The Colombian Armed Conflict has lasted over 50 years and is Latin Americas’ longest continuous conflict. Over 6 million people have been displaced and hundreds of thousands killed in the fighting.
Negotiations to reach a peace agreement have been taking place in Havana, Cuba for four years.
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos called it an “historic day for our country.”
