UK's next PM Theresa May known for caution, resolve2

Britain is just a few hours away from installing a new Prime Minister. The new leader, Theresa May takes over from the outgoing David Cameron – a political casualty in the wake of the U.K.’s vote to leave the European Union.

CCTV’s Richard Bestic takes a look at the career of the first woman since Margaret Thatcher to take up residence at No.10 Downing Street.

Around the cabinet table, May has put in a grueling six years as head of the Home Office, regarded as the toughest department in U.K. government.

She told the police to reform voluntarily or she’d force reform upon them. She took on Russia’s President Vladimir Putin over the killing in Britain of former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko.

May’s regarded as tough on migration and tough on the causes of migration. Along with cross border crime, reasons she voted to remain seated the European table.

Now charged with the task of negotiating the tricky detail of Brexit, she’s equally adamant.

In her new role, she talks of creating a society that works for everyone. “So that we can restore confidence in our most important institutions and the political process itself,” May said.

There are those who say Therese May’s more careful than creative. That if the sky came crashing, she’d reassuringly know what to do. And, of course, as Britain ventures off into its post Brexit unknown, caution could have a distinct appeal.
