East China recovers from Tyhpoon Meranti, on alert for Malakas

World Today

Still reeling from Tyhpoon Meranti three days ago, Taiwan is currently being pounded by Tyhpoon Malaka — and the Chinese Mainland is on high alert as well.

CCTV’s Si Nan reports.

Landslides have closed a major rail line in Taiwan and disrupted other ground-and-air transport.

The storm has slowed, but it’s still forecast for landfall on the Chinese Mainland this weekend.

Meanwhile, recovery is underway in the aftermath of Typhoon Meranti.

The Chinese Mainland death toll from Meranti is now 28 – with 15 missing. Two people also in the Taiwan region.

Builders are among the busiest groups of people since Meranti hit Xiamen, in East China’s Fujian province. Meranti’s maximum 15-grade wind force and extraordinary rainstorms left the city in chaos.

Xiamen University, regarded as the most beautiful university by many, turned into a world of water, with no power.

The city is working to drain water away but the process may take days.

The typhoon also cut off tap water supplies and caused a mass blackout.

All those complications resulted in the suspension of bus services and all regular speed trains departing from Xiamen.

Those services are now gradually resuming after busy relief operations. Water supply and power had mostly resumed as of Saturday morning.

But the peace may not last long, as the region braces for Malakas.
