Growing number of Chechen asylum seekers entering Germany’s border

The head of Germany’s police union has warned Chechen terrorists could be entering the country undetected. That’s as the eastern state of Brandenburg reports a large increase in Russian asylum-seekers – mostly from Chechnya.

Border controls don’t extend this far north – there was never a need. But now the state of Brandenburg’s ground and air teams are busier.

The vast majority of migrants and refugees that came to Germany last year took the southern Balkans route – and so a lot of police hardware was diverted to help with that effort. But in the first six months of this year, there was an almost six fold increase in the number of Russians taking that eastern route through Poland. And that’s meant many of those resources have been brought back.
