Latino political groups mobilize to fight Trump’s rhetoric

Latin America

In the United States, Latin Americans make up the largest minority group in the country with more than 11 million voted in the 2012 presidential election. However, 2.5 million registered Latino voters did not go to the polls.

Getting those voters to the polls on Election Day could have a big impact on the result.

CCTV’s Nitza Soledad Perez reports from Florida.

Latino organizations across the United States are on the move. Going from grocery stores to churches, leaving no stair unclimbed, they are canvassing neighborhoods, registering eligible citizens to vote in November’s presidential election.

Organizers said this is the year the Latino vote can make a difference and they’re setting their sights on the 9 million legal immigrants now eligible for citizenship and voting in 2016.

A record 27 million Latinos are eligible to vote in November. But the largest minority group in the United States is not known for its political engagement.

Community organizers said many Latino immigrants have a distrust of politics, and feel isolated from civic life in the US.
