Responsibilities: A successful candidate will assist CCTV America executives in communicating the network’s unique vision, while safeguarding its integrity.

We seek an editor who is committed to collaboration. An editor must be a good communicator because making TV is a team effort. We believe in working cooperatively to attain our industry’s highest standards. Editors will review stories written for the web, too.

Writing for publication is more strict about grammar and spelling. The best newswriting is plain and vigorous. So we want editors who can transform compound and complex sentences into short declarative ones.

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Review scripts for grammar, accuracy, style and balance
  • Check primary sources (i.e., government databases) and secondary sources (i.e., the media) to ensure scripts are ready for broadcast or publication
  • Read widely in the foreign press. When editing a story about China, it’s essential to read the Chinese media. Likewise, when editing news from the EU, Latin America and Africa
  • Pitch story ideas
  • Mentor interns
  • Working directly with graphics department to create show graphics

Qualifications/ Requirements:

  • Mastery of the English language is essential. Prefer candidates with a demonstrated ability to write with clarity, finesse and flair.
  • Deep knowledge of international affairs and a keen interest in China and the global economy.
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field (i.e., English Literature, History, Economics, Political Science, Business, Asian Studies or a hard science like Biology or Chemistry).
  • Ability to work flexible hours (including nights and weekends), ability to work under tight deadlines, ability to work under pressure, and during breaking news

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience working in a multicultural newsroom is a plus
  • Experience living abroad would be a bonus, too
  • Candidates with expertise in finance, banking and macroeconomics—or a hard science (i.e., biology or chemistry).
  • 5+ years of experience in international news
  • Ability to edit scripts for accuracy, balance, clarity and a style appropriate to a story’s subject matter
  • Experience editing business or science
  • Candidates must be able to work in a fast-paced, demanding 24-hour newsroom
  • Must be able to work flexible hours and extended shifts when necessary
