The Heat: The Rise of Populism

From political movements in France and Germany, to the Netherland’s Party for Freedom and Austria’s Freedom Party, political parties challenging the status quo in central and northern Europe appear to reflect a populist, anti-immigrant stance.

The voters of these so-called populist parties bear a striking similarity to many of Donald Trump’s supporters, whose surprising election to the White House sent shockwaves around the world.

But for all they have in common, “populism” can mean different things to different groups and geographic locations.
