Afghanistan in 2017What’s next for Afghanistan?

2017 started out in Afghanistan with more of the same type of violence the country has experienced for years.

Dozens were killed in recent terror attacks. And the Taliban, who once controlled Afghanistan, continues to destabilize the U.S.-backed Afghan government. Meanwhile, Russia is taking a renewed interest in Afghanistan. Moscow hosted a trilateral meeting late last month with representatives from China and Pakistan. We will discuss the implications of all that in a few moments, but we begin with correspondent Fayez Sahak who joins us from Kabul.

Tonight’s panel takes a look at the future of Afghanistan and it’s place in international politics:

  • Omar Samad, former Afghan ambassador to France and Canada and former senior adviser to the Chief Executive of Afghanistan.
  • Hassan Abbas, professor of International Security Studies at the National Defense University and former adviser to General Pervez Musharraf and Benazir Bhutto.
  • Lu Yang, researcher at Tsinghua University who focuses on China’s relations in South Asia.
  • Andrew Small, senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund.
