US Capital on high alert ahead of swearing-in ceremony

World Today

Washington, D.C. on high alert, preparing for the inauguration of Donald Trump as the next U.S. president.

CGTN’s Jim Spellman has the latest.

Roads are closing and the crowds attending the swearing in and parade will pass through metal detectors. Authorities are especially concerned about a Nice or Berlin style vehicle attack.

Thousands of police from around the U.S. will provide security, including FBI bomb technicians and SWAT units.

But the biggest challenge may be the thousands of protesters coming to Washington. The demonstrations have already started. Most are expected to be peaceful, but authorities say they are ready.

Most visitors don’t seem too worried. Inaugural events, and protests, will continue through the weekend.
