Europe on edge as Trump enters White House

Global Business

As Trump moves into the West Wing of the White House, military generals and analysts in Europe are wondering what’s the future for current military alliances.

CGTN’s Elena Casas reports on NATO’s future from Brussels.

Leaders in NATO and the EU are struggling to know how to respond – some are hoping Trump’s administration won’t follow through on his rhetoric.

But some analysts see an opportunity here – for European countries to band together and build a diplomatic and defense alliance – without the U.S.

That could mean the EU builds a closer relationship with China – especially over trade issues, if Trump makes good on his promises to move away from globalization and impose tariffs.

There’s a broad consensus in Europe in favor of free trade – but over Russia and defense, the EU is split. European countries will need to forge unity and stand together if they are to stand up to a Trump administration moving closer to Russia.
