Mexicans at border react to Trump's wall proposal

At one of the busiest U.S.-Mexico border crossings in San Ysidro, California, south of San Diego, more than 100,000 people cross back and forth from both countries each day. The majority of them Mexicans who work legally in San Diego, or have tourist visas to visit and shop in the U.S.

CGTN’s Mike Kirsch reports.

Selene Cardenas says she worries about the impact the wall may have on Mexicans attempting to cross into the U.S. “illegally” to find work.

“It makes Mexican people to feel afraid,” Cardenas said. “I don’t think that’s a good thing for Mexico or the US because I think the Mexicans help a lot on the economy here as well.”

Anglo San Diego senior citizen resident Steve Brenner, an Uber Driver at the border says he is very much in favor of the wall. He voted for Donald Trump.

Lifelong San Diego resident Steve Brenner says the wall will stop Mexicans from coming to the U.S. illegally.

More Mexicans have been leaving rather than coming to the United States in the last decade, according to widely accepted migration research, because the border crossing process – legally or illegally – has long been so difficult.

Many Mexicans say if building a wall on the Mexico border is one way – as Trump claims – of “Making America Great Again,” he will not be making a lot of friends among Mexicans, here, or south of the border.
