U.S. President Donald Trump attacked U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat from Connecticut, claiming he was being deceitful about U.S. Supreme Court nominee.

Critics have insisted that Trump’s attack has far-reaching implications.

CGTN’s Sean Callebs reports.

After a closed door meeting with Donald Trump’s selection to be the next justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Neil Gorsuch, Sen. Blumenthal quoted Gorsuch, saying the high court nominee was “disheartened” and “demoralized” by Trump’s repeated attacks on the U.S. Judiciary.

Blumenthal said it’s time for Gorsuch to speak openly. Trump, however, is taking issue with Blumenthal’s characterization.

“You misrepresented his comments totally — his comments were misrepresented. And what you should do is ask Senator Blumenthal about his Vietnam record that didn’t exist after years of saying it did,” Trump fied back. In his latest move to deflect growing criticism of his administration, President Trump aimed his attack to comments Blumenthal made while campaigning in 2010.

Blumenthal, at the time said he served in Vietnam. He later clarifying the comments, to point out he was in the U.S. Marines, during the Vietnam era.

All parties said Gorsuch agreed to make the criticism public. The bigger concern for many is Trump’s history of hostile remarks about the U.S. Judiciary, most recently criticizing the federal appeals court debating the future of Trump’s proposed travel ban, as well as blasting the Washington State judge who initially ruled against him regarding the contentious executive order.
