Brazil looks to attract more Chinese tourists to country

A Chinese-Brazilian samba lover, Eduardo Wang, is trying to bring more Chinese tourists to the country for events like Carnival.

CGTN’s Lucrecia Franco.

“I love Carnival and though my father was Chinese and not so used to it because of the culture and worked 24 hours a day, but Carnival is a time to stop,” Wang said.

Eduardo loves Rio’s street bands and this year there are hundreds to choose from, where crowds gather to dance and sing. And this is an experience he would like to share with people from China.

While China is the biggest source of tourists in the world, Brazil is still not a popular destination for Chinese travelers, not even during Rio’s famous Carnival festivities.”

According to Brazil’s latest official numbers just 53,000 Chinese tourists visited Brazil in 2015. A small number considering 120 million Chinese traveled overseas that same year, as per China’s Tourism research institute.

But efforts to attract more Chinese tourists are underway:

Brazil is considering waiving visas for visitors from several countries, including China, a move that could help Rio and samba lover Eduardo Wang see more visitors from the Asian giant next Carnival.
