The last 300 members of Colombia’s FARC rebels have arrived in their transition zone to begin the disarming process, but not all the sites are ready.
CGTN’s Michelle Begue reports.
Hundreds of FARC rebels in Colombia’s Andes Mountains have prepared for the first phase of disarmament.
The men and women are in one of the country’s 26 demarcated transition zones, where the guerrillas are expected to disarm.
On Dec 1, Colombia’s congress ratified a peace agreement with the FARC rebels. This started a countdown for surrendering all weapons to United Nations representatives within six months.
FARC rebels have been complaining that many of the transition zones are not ready. The rural areas are traditional guerrilla strongholds and remote. The government has blamed delays on logistical issues.
As the rebels wait for the zones to be completed, they study the agreements and make plans for the future. Rebels have voiced concerns that the government won’t keep its promises, but they all have agreed there is no turning back on peace.
