The dark business of human trafficking threatens young women in Peru

Americas Now

Peru has tens of thousands of human trafficking victims and, according to the Global Slavery Index, is one of the countries with the highest rates of human trafficking in the Americas.

The majority affected are women and girls who are lured through misleading job ads, and taken to the southern part of the country, into areas known for illegal gold mining. There, they are forced into prostitution or child sexual exploitation and are coerced into captivity through fraud or force.

Correspondent Dan Collyns investigates the people-trafficking trade in an illegal gold mining zone, in the Peruvian Amazon.
