IMF and the World Bank Group

This week on Biz Asia America, we’re bringing you extensive coverage of the 2014 IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, D.C (April 7-13, 2014).

From IMF.org: Each Spring, thousands of government officials, journalists, civil society organizations, and invited participants from academia and private sectors, gather in Washington D.C. for the Spring Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank Group. At the heart of the gathering are meetings of the IMF’s International Monetary and Financial Committee and the joint World Bank-IMF Development Committee, which discuss the progress of the two organizations. The week also include seminars, regional briefings, press conferences, and many other events focused on the global economy, international development, and the world’s financial markets.

High on the agenda is the future of U.S. monetary policy, as the ongoing tapering of stimulus spending under new Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen continues to grab global headlines. On the opposite side of the globe, China’s government is working to sustain economic growth with a variety of reforms. The world’s second-largest economy now faces a crucial point as it tries to pivot from being an export-driven economy, to an economy driven by domestic consumption. Meanwhile, Europe is slowly inching toward recovery, with governments reworking their budgets and regulators holding banks to higher scrutiny. However, unemployment is still a major problem, especially among the young. And political turmoil involving Russia, Ukraine and the West is fueling concerns that regional instability could derail economic recovery not only in Europe, but the entire world. Also in the spotlight are emerging economies, which the IMF says will see slower growth this year. After years of speedy expansion, the developing world is now forced to cope with the decreasing flow of U.S. capital into international markets and the impact of China’s slowdown.

The plenary sessions of the IMF and the World Bank Group Boards of Governors take place once a year during the Annual Meetings in the autumn.
