China Launches Website to Promote Organ Donation

Insight

China has launched its first official website to spread the word about organ donations. It will also allow potential donors to register online. The country has one of the world’s largest demands for organ transplants. Each year, at least 300,000 patients suffer from organ failure, but only about 10,000 transplants are performed due to a lack of donors.

To cope with the shortage, the government regulated the industry in 2007, and launched a pilot program to help to raise awareness.Since then, at least 1600 have donated organs and over 4000 patients have received transplant operations. In setting up the website the government hopes it will help to attract even more potential donors. CCTV’s Lin Nan has the story.
