Venezuelan President Holds Talks with Opposition

Venezuela’s president Nicolas Maduro held talks with the opposition in an effort to “end” weeks of protests. Apart from the President, Vice President Jorge Arreaza and opposition leaders attended the meeting.

The foreign ministers of Ecuador, Brazil and Colombia, and a special observer from the Vatican were also in attendance. Maduro said he hoped the different parties would patiently listen to each other’s appeals and then find ways to resolve the dispute.

Opposition representatives expressed satisfaction over the talks and said it sent a good signal to let people hear different voices, and added they hope this kind of dialogue can be carried forward in the future.

Former presidential candidate and Miranda Governor Henrique Capriles said Venezuela is facing serious problems with public order and with its economy. He added that he believes the participants at the talks, who represent both sides, can dialogue to help resolve differences.

The country has seen some of the biggest anti-government demonstrations in more than a decade. But, can the deeply polarized leaders find common ground?  Venezuelans are wondering whether these talks can resolve the country’s current political crisis.
