Game Changer: Alfredo Tilves

Americas Now

It’s no secret that poverty is a problem in many countries throughout Latin America. But all too often, some cities considered affluent are actually quite poor. Take Cartegena, Colombia for example. Travel books rank it as a top vacation destination and praise it as being a fairy-tale seaport city where the sun always shines. But what tourists may not “see” are the slums.

It’s estimated that over a third of the population lives below the poverty level. This week with our new expanded edition of Americas Now, we introduce a new segment called “Gamechanger.” It focuses on an individual trying to ignite change in their community through positive action. Our first “Gamechanger” comes from Cartagena.

He is an athletic coach named Alfredo. He was so saddened by the poverty he saw around him and the limited opportunities for young people, he decided to do something about it. Now he is using soccer to change the game.
