Uruguayan FM Luis Almagro: Changes are Happening in Uruguay

Uruguay, a small country of just over three million people, but it made “international” headlines last year when it became the first country to legalize the production and distribution of marijuana. It has also legalized same-sex marriage and boasts such a strong economy. It is seen by banks and wealthy businessmen around the world as an ideal tax haven.

And just last year, the prestigious global business magazine “The Economist” named “Uruguay” its 20-13 “Country of the Year.” The publication credited Uruguay for creating a system which, “if emulated by other countries,” could help solve some of the world’s problems.

Luis Almagro is the new Minister of Foreign Affairs. His job is to help President Jose Mujica and his government create public policy, and express their country’s view to other nations.  Recently the Foreign Minister was here in Washington on business and CCTV’s Eliane Reyes had the chance to sit down with him. She asked him about some of the changes taking place in his country. Here’s what he had to say.
