Emotions Mount as Rescuers Seek Survivors of Sunken South Korea Ferry

World Today

Authorities are investigating if the captain of the capsized ferry off South Korea’s coast was one of the first ones off the sinking ship. The 68-year-old has been questioned by the coast guard. He also made a brief videotaped appearance, apologizing for the tragedy.
The captain was reported to have tried to stabilize the vessel before ordering its evacuation. A crewman told reporters that by the time the order came, it was impossible to help many of the passengers. Also, there are questions about whether the order was actually relayed to passengers on the public address system. There are 25 confirmed deaths from the disaster. But, nearly 270 people are still missing. Rescuers want to pump oxygen into the ship to help any survivors. CCTV correspondent Shane Hahm reports from Seoul.
