The man who penned the words “What matters in life is not what happens to you but what you remember and how you remember it,” died April 17, at the age of 87.

Author García Márquez was celebrated worldwide for creating the genre of magical realism, and for painting dream-like stories of longing and love. One of his most famous novels 100 Years of Solitude, launched him into the literary spotlight in 1967, and made him the first Colombian man to win a Nobel Prize. He was known for telling extraordinary tales, and other novels that followed including Love in the Time of Cholera and Chronicle of a Death Foretold. His vivid prose and intellect will be dearly missed by readers and writers around the world.
