Argentina Sees Hope in Crimean Referendum

The upheaval and continued crisis in Ukraine is being watched around the world. Argentina took a particular interest in Crimea’s vote to join the Russian Federation. That’s because Argentina has been locked in its own sovereignty struggle over the Malvinas-also known as the Falkland Islands.

Reclaiming the Malvinas, is central to Argentine foreign policy, and for that to happen Argentina is looking for increased international support. The local press reported Russian president Vladimir Putin called to thank Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner for her support in Ukrainian crisis. While in France last month, she had criticized what she called international double standards – rejecting the Crimea referendum, while accepting last year’s vote in which Malvinas residents opted to remain British.
