China’s Foreign Minister Visits Cuba

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has arrived in Cuba for the start of a week-long visit to Latin America, which will also include Venezuela, Argentina and Brazil. It’s the latest indication of China’s growing political and commercial ties to the region.

Wang Yi met his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla on Sunday and said the meeting was in preparation for the upcoming visit of China’s President Xi Jinping to the island. Rodriguez Parrilla thanked Wang for China’s support to Cuba, especially in the face of the US trade blockade against the island.According to Cuba’s Statistics Office, China is the country’s second largest trade partner after Venezuela. Rodriguez Parrilla noted that the “excellent” relations between Cuba and China cover sectors ranging from cultural to economic and scientific to academic areas.
