UN Concerned about Alleged Chlorine Gas in Syria

World Today

The United Nations Security Council says it is gravely concerned about new reports that the Syrian government may be dropping bombs filled with chlorine.

Syrian government forces have attacked rebel-held areas with poisonous chlorine gas in recent weeks and months, leaving men, women and children coughing, choking and gasping for breath, according to a news agency’s interview with more than a dozen activists, medics and residents on the opposition side. Syria has flatly denied the allegations, though this has not been confirmed by any foreign country or international organization. But if true, they highlight the limitations of the global effort to rid President Assad’s government of its chemical weapons.

The country’s UN ambassador categorically denied the allegations at the UN. These developments follow a closed-door UN council meeting in New York. CCTV’s Liling Tan reports from the United Nations headquarters.
