UN Expresses Concern over Violence in South Sudan

World Today

The United Nations has expressed its horror at the recent ethnic massacre of hundreds of people in South Sudan. It has threatened to take “additional measures” if the attacks continue.

The killings are the latest violent upsurge in a five-month conflict between two ethnic communities that bears worrying similarities to the genocide in Rwanda 20 years ago. In a strongly worded press statement released Thursday, UN deplored the killings last week in Bentiu, the capital of oil-producing Unity state, as well as the use of radio broadcasts to “foment hate and sexual violence.”

UN expressed “grave concern” over the more than 23,000 displaced people who are seeking shelter at the U.N. camp in Bentiu as the risk of a humanitarian crisis grows. CCTV’s Nick Harper has the story.
