Chinese Foreign Minister Visits Brazil

World Today

China’s foreign minister Wang Yi has been holding talks in the Brazilian capital Brasilia, at the end of his week-long regional tour to strengthen economic and political ties with Latin American countries.

This is the final stop in Foreign Minister’s Wang Yi’s visit to Latin America. Brazil is this region’s biggest economy– China its main trading partner. The setting for bilateral talks was Itamaraty Palace, the modernist headquarters of Brazil’s foreign ministry. An appropriate location for a meeting designed to offer new perspectives on the challenges, and opportunities, which these two developing giants face. Much of the morning was spent at what was the first Brazil-China global strategic dialogue. Its purpose is to deepen relations between both countries, and explore where else, beyond the economic, they can cooperate, and share ideas.

The Chinese foreign minister confirmed that the Chinese President would be making a state visit to Brazil in July. His Brazilian counterpart also said that an invitation was being extended to President Xi Jinping to attend the final for the forthcoming FIFA world cup. Both delegations spoke of these two developing nations’ inter-dependence upon one another. They say they will be meeting once a year, to build on that. CCTV’s Stephen Gibbs has this report from Brasilia.
