Tensions are escalating in the Ukraine crisis.

A homemade bomb exploded near Ukrainian soldiers who were in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region Monday, killing one and injuring another, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said.

The mayor of the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv underwent emergency surgery after being shot in the back, city officials and police said Monday, amid continuing unrest in the region.

Russia is facing new sanctions for its alleged role in eastern Ukraine where new protests have ended in clashes.

Russia’s deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov has voiced his, “disgust,” at new sanctions announced by the United States. The sanctions against seven more high-ranking Russian government officials and seventeen companies are punishment for what Washington sees as Russia’s fomenting unrest in eastern Ukraine. Moscow has denied orchestrating the unrest and has dismissed sanctions, though economists have been worried by their impact on the Russian economy. CCTV’s Tom Barton reports.
