People in Uruguay will soon be able buy up to 10 grams of marijuana a week, once new licensing laws kick in. Homegrown marijuana is a million dollar business that has been illegal up until now but the government could reap some of the benefits.

It is not just users, but now the state that is experimenting with cannabis. The historic decision to legalize the sale and production of marijuana in Uruguay is a bold new approach to the problem of drug use.This law has public health as the number one priority. Most users are expected to buy directly from pharmacies, but there are those who will be growing their own, and that in turn has opened up a new market.

In their mid-20s, these two friends started an online business two years ago, selling equipment for growing marijuana indoors. Business is going so well that ‘Urugrow’ has opened its first shop in Montevideo, and the owners have left their previous jobs.

‘Home grown’ is a popular choice. The new law allows cannabis clubs of between 15 and 45 members to grow a maximum of 99 plants.

As Uruguay President Jose Mujica told CCTV last July, the purpose of this legislation is “to steal the market from the drug trade”.

In order to be competitive, the price of marijuana will be kept low. That will benefit Uruguay’s estimated 120,000 cannabis users. And Uruguay’s pioneering position is not likely to end with legalization. Scientists from around the world have indicated interest in working with Uruguay as they conduct research into marijuana’s medicinal uses. Uruguayan officials say they’re enthusiastic about the possibilities.
