The leadership of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, calling on residents of this city in eastern Ukraine to join their so-called self-defense forces.

They called this rally to protest the loss of more than 30 lives in the southern port city of Odessa-where groups of Ukrainian nationalists clashed Friday with anti-government protesters there. A fire erupted minutes later in a trade union hall-trapping people inside.

Dozens suffocated, some jumped out of windows to their death. It’s been a very somber mood here in Donetsk. But the same time people are asking how is it possible that 40 people were burnt alive on Friday night in Odessa.

The anger here in Donetsk is being fueled by videos like this one-reportedly showing a group of pro-Kiev activists preparing Molotov cocktails.

Ukraine’s Interim President, Oleksandr Turchynov, issued a statement saying: “The day of May 2 was a tragic day for Ukraine. I have signed a decree for two days of mourning in Ukraine for the heroes who died in the course of the antiterrorist operation, and also for those who died in the tragic events in Odessa.”

The protesters seized the regional security services building in Donetsk-with no police in sight. The conflict continued over the air waves as well.

The Russian news channel Rossiya 24 went off the air once again after reports that Ukrainian forces took back the TV transmission tower that pro-independence activists took over last Sunday.

Local self-defense forces rushed to secure the local television center that, for now, still remains in their hands.
