U.S. Foreign Policy Under President Barack Obama

The Heat

In a recent column in The Washington Post, noted scholar Robert Kagan, a senior fellow at the Washington-based Brookings Institution wrote: “Whether one likes President Obama’s conduct of foreign policy or not, the common assumption is that the administration is at least giving the American people the foreign policy they want.”

So when the U.S. president’s critics call for military intervention in Syria or Ukraine, or more involvement in Egypt, Iraq or Afghanistan, just to name a few global hot spots, the administration can point to the sensibilities expressed by the American people in recent polls. The latest Wall Street Journal poll found that nearly half those surveyed want the United States to be less active on the global stage — a change from decades marked by U-S engagement in various conflicts. The Heat invites scholars and experts from all over the globe to join the discussion.

To begin, CCTV correspondent Nathan King joins CCTV’s Anand Naidoo to talk about U.S. foreign policies.

Also joining the conversation are Michael Shifter, former director of the Latin American and Caribbean program at the National Endowment for Democracy and currently serves as the president of Inter-American Dialogue–a U-S think tank on issues in Western Hemisphere affairs; PJ Crowley, professor at The George Washington University’s Institute for Public Diplomacy and Global Communication, former U-S Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs in the Obama administration.
